APERTURE BOOK PARTY with Alex Webb, Rebecca Norris Webb, Larry Fink and Denise Wolff, 3pm: https://www.aperture.org/event/photography-workshop-series-fink-webbs/

“There is a poem by the twelfth-century Telugu poet Nanne Coda that I often think about: ‘An arrow shot by an archer/ or a poem made by a poet/ should cut through your heart/ jolting the head.’ We go to photography for this shock of recognition that registers in the body. When I took a workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb at the Aperture Foundation in New York City, I found among my fellow students a shared curiosity about what can make a photograph work in this way, what can help it transcend the ordinary. We all wanted to know how to bring out the potential in our photographic visions.

We were all drawn to this particular workshop, in the first place, by our admiration for the teachers’ photography. Alex Webb’s pictures are justly celebrated prodigies of vision. In three decades of work, he has created a distinctive voice that is radically different from its street-photography antecedents, the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Lee Friedlander. And yet, his labyrinthine and tightly constructed pictures are also deeply soulful, often hinting at realities beyond the visible by a skillful use of hot color and inky shadow. Geoff Dyer, in his afterword to Alex’s monograph ‘The Suffering of Light,’ aptly described him as a ‘metaphysical photographer.’

Soulfulness is also key to Rebecca Norris Webb’s work, which is otherwise stylistically different from Alex’s. In Rebecca’s street photography, what we get is not the complex geometry of public interactions, but the capture of private moods in semi-public spaces, in the tradition of those quietly reflective photographs of Andre Kertesz, Robert Frank, Saul Leiter, images that suggest as much about the photographer’s interiority as the wider world. I think of her images as being ventilated, full of entrances and exits. She is a visual poet of thresholds, often making use of reflections, aquaria, curtains, windows to evoke those other more metaphoric meeting places —between one’s interior landscape and the natural world, reverie and reality, life and death. I remember sitting down with her book ‘My Dakota.’ After a while, I was drawn into the intense quiet of those photos. The world fell away. I could hear my heart beating. The hush, grief, and emotional undertow as I turned each page made me curious: how does a photographer create such stillness?

But we students were not there to learn specific styles of photography. There was no question of imitating either Rebecca or Alex. We were after some greater wisdom: about the attitude in which one presses the shutter, the thinking with which a series of photos might be sequenced, and the realities one has to negotiate to turn an idea for a book into a crafted physical object. In a congenial and collegial atmosphere, they taught us how to pursue those moments of fugitive poetry that are at the heart of great photography.”—Teju Cole, introduction to “Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image”

ROBERT FRANK: A Tribute

October 20, 2014

I DREAM OF JOURNEYS

Even though photography tends to be a solitary journey, you often end up taking others along for the ride.

Driving through the Western landscape while working on My Dakota, I couldn’t help but think of Robert Frank’s View from Hotel Window, Butte, Montana, from The Americans. I’ve always marveled at how Frank managed to capture not only the feel of this mining center’s drab downtown, but also something more difficult to pin down (melancholy? irony? reverie? a mix of all three?). Whatever it is, it hints at Frank’s complex interiority as he gazed through the gauzy curtains of his hotel room at this mining town’s distant smokestack—and the bleak reality of what the American West had become by the mid-1950s. It’s a view that shouldn’t “merit a second glance,” writes British cultural critic and novelist Geoff Dyer, yet it “demands that we return to it again and again.” For me, that’s usually a sign that I’m looking at a truly poetic image.

It wasn’t just Frank’s lyrical photograph that was coming along on this road trip of my grief for my brother, Dave. I was also bringing along some of my favorite car-trip poems, many that focus on the technological world of the automobile and the natural world outside its windows: “Two forces—one forward moving, unthinking, one stilled and reflective—connect and disconnect us,” notes poet Marianne Boruch. She adds, “The uneasy match seems profoundly American.”

Driving through South Dakota’s remote expanses, I’d sometimes not encounter another car for miles, calling to mind those haunting first lines of Theodore Roethke’s road-trip poem, “The Far Field”: I dream of journeys repeatedly . . . Of driving alone, without luggage, out a long peninsula . . . A fine dry snow ticking the windshield . . .

It was nearly dusk that wintry day in 2006 when I finally stopped my car in front of this abandoned farmhouse. I’d been driving restlessly for some four hours, through a stretch of the prairie I’d never crossed before. Flat land and flat light as far as the eye could see. Somewhere I’d taken a wrong turn. The car radio warned snow was coming. My cell phone was dead, and I was lost.

The farm reminded me of my grandparents’ place, where I’d spent many a childhood summer with my brother, Dave, his twin brother, Mike, and my sisters Mary and Debbie. I remember the never-ending whirring of june bugs on Grandma Raisovich’s back screen door, and how she’d tie a string around those shimmering green bodies so we could hold on to all that humming.

Coming around the side of this deserted farmhouse, I was surprised to find the back door open, as if welcoming me in. I gingerly crossed the living-room floor, which was strewn with children’s toys and cereal boxes. It seemed, eerily, as if the family had hurriedly packed and left the night before—although it had to have been longer ago, judging by the thick dust coating everything. Perhaps South Dakota’s marginal rainfall and brutal weather were largely to blame for their sudden departure, having defeated many a farmer for more than a century. I paused in front of this living-room window with its shroud-like curtain and view of a distant silo. I slowly raised the camera to my eye. —RNW, from “Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image”

Reflections on Ray Metzker, 1931-2014

October 10, 2014

“I want a deep space that overpowers the figure: worlds of voids.”—Ray Metzker, 1931-2014

Sadly, we’ve lost a poet of light and shadow, Ray Metzker. Here is Alex’s thoughtful reflection about this unique street photographer—and specifically this dark urban haiku of a photograph (above) that Metzker took some 50 years ago, that has long lingered in Alex’s mind and influenced his early street photography, notably Alex’s image from Uganda below taken some 20 years after Metzker’s.—Rebecca Norris Webb

“As a budding street photographer, I’d spend hours huddled over a stack of books in my Vermont high school’s library, many of them the classics: works by Cartier Bresson, Kertész, Frank. I was particularly taken by a slim booklet called Toward a Social Landscape— which included early work by Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, and Bruce Davidson, among others, and was edited by photographer Nathan Lyons—as well as a selection of Ray Metzker’s photographs entitled My Camera and I in the Loop,in an issue of Aperture. Although reminiscent of the street photographs of his teacher, Harry Callahan, Metzker’s work struck its own special note: stark shafts of light crisscrossing impenetrable shadows; self-absorbed figures darting in and out of the light, caught in a kind of black-and-white chiaroscuro; isolated faces peering out of the darkness.

It wasn’t just the formal mastery of these images that captivated me. They also suggested something about the isolation, the alienation, and the loneliness of the urban world. “—Alex Webb, from “Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image”
