Reflections on Ray Metzker, 1931-2014

“I want a deep space that overpowers the figure: worlds of voids.”—Ray Metzker, 1931-2014

Sadly, we’ve lost a poet of light and shadow, Ray Metzker. Here is Alex’s thoughtful reflection about this unique street photographer—and specifically this dark urban haiku of a photograph (above) that Metzker took some 50 years ago, that has long lingered in Alex’s mind and influenced his early street photography, notably Alex’s image from Uganda below taken some 20 years after Metzker’s.—Rebecca Norris Webb

“As a budding street photographer, I’d spend hours huddled over a stack of books in my Vermont high school’s library, many of them the classics: works by Cartier Bresson, Kertész, Frank. I was particularly taken by a slim booklet called Toward a Social Landscape— which included early work by Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, and Bruce Davidson, among others, and was edited by photographer Nathan Lyons—as well as a selection of Ray Metzker’s photographs entitled My Camera and I in the Loop,in an issue of Aperture. Although reminiscent of the street photographs of his teacher, Harry Callahan, Metzker’s work struck its own special note: stark shafts of light crisscrossing impenetrable shadows; self-absorbed figures darting in and out of the light, caught in a kind of black-and-white chiaroscuro; isolated faces peering out of the darkness.

It wasn’t just the formal mastery of these images that captivated me. They also suggested something about the isolation, the alienation, and the loneliness of the urban world. “—Alex Webb, from “Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Street Photography and the Poetic Image”

MEMORY CITY at ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY

September 25, 2014

Robert Klein Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of work from Memory City, the latest collaboration and book project from husband and wife photographic team, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb.

Shot in Rochester, New York, Memory City is both a eulogy and an homage to Eastman Kodak and the city that once thrived in its prosperity. Shot in both digital and film color, as well as Alex Webb’s last remaining rolls of Kodachrome (which can now only be processed in black and white), the work looks back into the city’s history, and compels the viewer to ponder the uncertainty of its future.

Join us on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 2pm to 5pm for the opening reception of Memory City. With an artists’ talk at 3:30pm, followed by a book signing with available copies of Memory City (Radius Books, 2014) in the gallery, this opening reception is not to be missed!

MEMORY CITY: Photo-Eye Review

September 18, 2014
g

©Rebecca Norris Webb, “Twins,” from “Memory City,” with Alex Webb

“Photography is as intertwined with memory as it is with light, shadow and surface. The individual film or sensor choice made by the photographer determines how memory is rendered, a choice that is as important as what the photographer puts in front of their camera. In their new book, Memory City, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb investigate Rochester, New York during the time Eastman Kodak was in bankruptcy. They explore how memory, photography, film and the book making process come together to make a statement about a place during a particular time. What does it mean to photograph in Rochester during this uncertain time? Webb chose to use his digital cameras in addition to Kodachrome that he processed as black and white. Norris Webb worked like she typically does with color negative film. These individual creative choices give the book extra meaning, and are explored further in a small booklet tucked into the back cover titled Notes on Film and Memory…”—Tom Leininger review of “Memory Ciy” in Photo-Eye LINK TO READ THE COMPLETE REVIEW ONLINE

FRACTION MAGAZINE: Memory City review

September 2, 2014

©

“[Memory City] it is a powerful analysis of the use of photography and the ways in which memory and history are served by images, and as such it’s one of the best photography books about photography that I have seen. Memory City is about the material life of images, and the relationship between memory and material; and it examines how our acts of looking at ourselves fold us into the world of images that surround us. It also imaginatively describes the relationship between the photographer and the act of photography, reminding us that the photograph is not only evidence that the subject was there, but that the photographer was there too. This recognition of embodied looking is something frequently addressed in prose but rarely so effectively with photography.”—Leo Hsu, Memory City review in Fraction Magazine.

A few years ago, Pico Iyer wrote, in the afterword to our joint Cuba book, “Violet Isle,” that our work sometimes rhymes. Alex and I love that notion. At times, I can pinpoint these subtle echoes or slant rhymes—such as a shared palette or an affinity for surreal or surprising moments. Other times, why two of our photographs work together remains somewhat mysterious.”—Rebecca Norris Webb from “Slant Rhymes: Teju Cole and the Webb in conversation about “Memory City” and “On Street Photography and the Poetic Image”

LAST PHOTO PROJECT WORKSHOP: Oct. 2014

Alex Webb, Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 1996

Alex Webb, “Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 1996,” from “On Street Photography and the Poetic Image” (with Rebecca Norris Webb), Aperture summer 2014

After five years, we’ve decided that this will be the last week-long Photo Project Workshop we’ll be offering in NYC: Sunday Oct. 26-Sat. Nov. 1, 2014

This intimate workshop is for photographers currently working on a long-term photographic project they are passionate about. It will include daily group edits focusing on editing and sequencing intuitively, one-on-one and group text editing sessions, one-on-one sessions with a book designer (culminating in a book cover for each project), and lectures with photo book publishers and other experts in the field.

The main emphasis in this workshop is on focusing and shaping a project into a coherent whole. For some participants, this may result in a layout of a photographic exhibition and perhaps a catalogue; for others, it may result in a book dummy to be shown to potential photo book publishers (so far, four of these dummies have found publishers); for others, the project workshop may result in an edit for a future self-published online book or perhaps mockup for future handmade artist’s book.
