TWO EVENTS: Aspen and Rapid City

July 29, 2012

©Alex Webb, “Rochester, NY,  2012,” from “Memory City” (with Rebecca Norris Webb)

Rebecca and I are continuing to work on our new joint project, “Memory City,” and above is one of my photographs from our most recent trip in July.  We’ll be editing and sequencing the project this summer, and hope to post more work early fall.  Until then, hope to see some of you out West late July and early August at one of the two events below. ––Alex Webb

To say farewell to the TWO LOOKS online community for the summer, I’ve decided to post one of my favorite American road-trip poems that I was reading while working on “My Dakota.”  It’s called “Traveling Through the Dark,” by a fellow Westerner, the late William Stafford.  While I was living in Seattle, I had the good fortunate to hear Stafford read this wonderful poem, which most agree is his best.  The soft-spoken Stafford’s poem always brings to mind my father’s advice about driving South Dakota back roads at dusk, a time when you may very well encounter more mule deer and pronghorn than other cars.––Rebecca Norris Webb

TRAVELING THROUGH THE DARK

BY WILLIAM E. STAFFORD

Traveling through the dark I found a deer
dead on the edge of the Wilson River road.
It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:
that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead.
By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car
and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing;
she had stiffened already, almost cold.
I dragged her off; she was large in the belly.
My fingers touching her side brought me the reason—
her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting,
alive, still, never to be born.
Beside that mountain road I hesitated.
The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights;
under the hood purred the steady engine.
I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red;
around our group I could hear the wilderness listen.
I thought hard for us all—my only swerving—,
then pushed her over the edge into the river.

Rebecca and I are very glad to be in Rapid City, South Dakota,  for the opening of her “My Dakota” exhibition at the Dahl Arts Center.   As one can see in these installation shots, Rebecca is echoing the form of the book through writing some of her text pieces directly on the wall.

With this exhibition and book, Rebecca has managed to create something of poignant beauty and poetic resonance out of a family tragedy ––  her brother’s untimely death.  So this opening is particularly special because Rebecca’s father and mother, aged 92 and 85, are coming to the opening.

Also a nice coincidence: the New Yorker Photo Booth blog,  is running a piece on Rebecca’s book today.––Alex Webb
